What lies behind a beautiful route: how active travel in Italy is created

The road stretches on into the distance.
Ahead lies an ancient city.
Somewhere nearby — the sea, olive groves, or vineyards...

It seems that for such a journey, it is enough to find a beautiful place, choose a hotel, and plot a route on a map.

But behind every good journey there is much more.
Sometimes — months of preparation.
Sometimes — dozens of roads tested firsthand.
Sometimes — several versions of the same route, before the one appears that you want to share with others.

Because an active journey is not only about beautiful places.
It's about how one place connects with another.

A beautiful route
doesn't begin with a map

We live in Italy and have spent many years traveling through its regions.
So we know: a route that looks beautiful on screen doesn’t always become a good journey in reality.
On a map, a road may be short, but in person it turns out to be too busy.

A hotel may look ideal, but not be suitable for a group with bicycles. Between two beautiful cities there may be no convenient place to stop. And a small climb that seems insignificant can completely change the impression of the day.

That’s why we look at a route not only through a tourist’s eyes. We think about it as organizers. Where will it be convenient to stop? How long will the road take? Will this section suit participants with different levels of fitness? Can we find a good restaurant? What happens if the weather changes?
A good route is not the most direct line between two points. It is a journey put together in the right way.

We choose not only the places,
but the distances between them

In Italy it is easy to make a list of beautiful places. Apulia, Sicily, Sardinia, Tuscany, the Dolomites. Each region already sounds like an invitation to travel.

But our work begins where the list of attractions ends. We need to understand how to make the journey between them interesting. So that the road does not become just a necessary distance. So that along the route there are places for coffee, lunch, rest, and unexpected discoveries. So that participants do not feel they are being led through a program that must be completed at any cost.

So that along the route there are places for coffee, lunch, rest, and unexpected discoveries. So that participants do not feel they are being led through a program that must be completed at any cost.
We create routes with different characters.

There are calm journeys through Apulia — with white towns, olive groves, and a gentle rhythm..

There is Sicily, where in a single journey you can encounter the sea, history, mountain roads, and completely different sides of the island.
There is Sardinia — with its coastline, nature, and the opportunity to combine cycling stages with walks.

There is Tuscany and the Dolomites for those who want more terrain and physical challenge.

But in each case it is not only the kilometers that matter. What matters is the experience a person will gain over those kilometers.

Behind every route there are people

An active journey cannot be organised with just a map and a list of bookings. You need people who know the region.

  • Guides who understand cycling and know how to work with a group.
  • Local partners on the ground.
  • Hotels that are ready to welcome travellers with bikes.
  • Restaurants where they understand that after a long route, good food and a calm atmosphere matter most.
  • Drivers, transfers, technical support, communication between all the participants in the process.
The simpler a journey looks to the client, the more work usually stays behind the scenes.

That is precisely why we pay such close attention to the operational side. Our goal is to make sure the participant is thinking about the road, the scenery, and the experience — not about who will meet them at the airport, where to leave the bike, or how to get to the next hotel.

When a journey is created not for one person

Sometimes we develop a route for our own group. And sometimes companies come to us that want to offer an active journey to their own clients.

These can be tourist agencies, travel designers, international DMCs, or organisers of private trips. Such partners already have their own clients, working style, and service standards. They don't always need a ready-made tour.
Sometimes they need an idea. Sometimes — a route in a specific region. Sometimes — a fully organised programme they can offer under their own brand.

In such cases we step in as a local operational partner. We help develop the concept, choose the region, check the logistics, organise hotels, transfers, bikes, support, and all the details that turn an idea into a real journey.

Why a local partner matters

Italy can seem like a familiar country. It is easy to find a hotel, a restaurant, or a scenic road. But organising an active journey requires a different level of attention.

You need to know not only that a place is beautiful, but when it is best to visit. Not only where the route goes, but how suitable it is for a specific group. Not only which hotel looks good, but whether it can accommodate cyclists, provide the right level of service, and fit into the logistics of the programme.

A local presence allows issues to be resolved faster, details to be seen, and solutions to be offered that are not always obvious to someone outside the country. For us this is especially important, because we do not simply organise trips to Italy.

We live here. And we know it not only through tourist routes, but through everyday life, seasonality, roads, people, and the particularities of each region.

A journey can look many different ways

Not every client wants the same Italy.

  • Someone needs a comfortable route with beautiful hotels and gastronomy.
  • Someone else wants a more intensive programme with long stages and elevation gain.
  • Some want to travel as a whole family.
  • And some need a private trip for a couple or a small group of friends.
  • For some cycling matters most.
  • For others — a combination of cycling, walking routes, nature, and cultural impressions.

That is why we do not believe there is one universal format for an active journey. There is a specific client. Their interests. Their fitness level. Their idea of comfort.

And the organiser’s job is to bring all of that together into one coherent programme.

What remains behind a beautiful route

Work remains.
  • Checks.
  • Correspondence.
  • Changes.
  • Backup options.
  • Conversations with partners.
  • Finding the right hotel.
  • Checking the road.
  • Preparing the bicycles.
And many more details the traveller may never know about.
And that is a good thing. Because our job is not to occupy the client's attention with organisation. Our job is to free their attention for the journey itself. So they can enjoy Italy.

Not think about logistics. Not worry about every little detail. Not try to piece together a trip from dozens of scattered elements on their own. But simply ride, walk, look around, and feel that everything has been thought through.

For us, this is Italy without filters

We do not aim to make the journey artificially perfect. We want to make it real, beautiful, and well organised. With the right roads. The right pace. Good people. Places you want to remember. And attention to detail that usually goes unnoticed.

Bike & Travel works with active journeys in Italy, and also has experience organising programmes in France, Spain, and Mexico.

We can create journeys for our own groups or become a local partner for companies that want to offer their clients something special.

If you create journeys and are looking for a team that can take on the organisation of an active programme on the ground, we would be glad to discuss collaboration.

More about the DMC and white-label format can be found on the partners page.
